Great show again guys, kept it interesting despite slow news and bugar all new releases.
On the subject (which I think is Dits' personal favourite) of games getting "dumbed down", I have to say that I disagree to a certain extent.
If we're talking about a loss of complex game systems, I think it is more an evolution than a reduction in functionality. All systems get better by becoming simpler. Automation of non essential functions, and improvement and refinement of the UI generally lead to a more enjoyable experience, case in point (so I understand) Mass Effect 1 to 2. Having a less complex user facing interface in no way makes for a lesser, or easier experience, otherwise most 8 and 16 bit computer games with their one button joysticks, would be the absolute epitome of dumbed down gaming.
As to wether or not games are getting easier, that's a very subjective question. I think that most games when set to "Bloody Hard", are indeed bloody hard. The nice thing is that these days there is a sliding scale of difficulties so that more people can enjoy all the content that a game has to offer.
And with all of the above said, there are still games out there which have true "Hardcore appeal" - Demon's Souls, StarCraft 2, Resonance of fate, Super Mario Galaxy 2 etc.
I think it's fair to say that only PC gamers are likely to think that games are being dumbed down, as beloved franchises they view as their own are necessarily tweaked for console releases. From a console gamers point of view complexity is on the rise as the developers struggle to efficiently implement a keyboards worth of inputs onto a pad. Its a bit like dissing a band you once loved because they've now got a song in the charts, and are therefore sellouts.
In closing, stop grumbling you grumpy old fart.
I totally take all of your points on and don't disagree with any of them.
My addition would be a lot of developers tend to stress more accessible gameplay structure. However I have said this before there needs to be more complex variations when choosing difficulty. Not just more bad guys with higher HP but more complex gameplay options.
As with every single one of my arguments and viewpoints I end with, we need to look elsewhere for true original and more challenging (skill-wise or other) experiences in games than the mainstream. Look for lesser known games from lesser known developers and games you wouldnt normally try! This is a healthy state of mind I feel. But currently, as of right now, taking video games on the whole, I would say I am concerned about stagnation more than difficulty. I'm scared of Activision and EA having too much power
